Akomfrah Wins Prize

John Akomfrah has been named the winner of the Artes Mundi contemporary art prize. The biennial award, which is held in Cardiff and comes with £40,000 prize money, focuses on artists who engage with social and political issues and the human condition. John Akomfrah was chosen for his “substantial body of outstanding work” over a number of years, including his video installation ‘Vertigo Sea’ scored by Tandis Jenhudson. The international prize was awarded on 26th January in Cardiff, where an exhibition of the six shortlisted artists is being held.

New BBC1 Commission

Tandis has signed on to score the BBC1 feature documentary Stalkers from Wild Pictures, a 60-minute doc with exclusive access to Paladin, the National Stalking Advocacy Service. It is being produced and directed by Kat English. Executive producers are Paul Hamann and Tom Anstiss.

The Traffickers

‘The Traffickers’ Premiere

Fusion’s new series, The Traffickers, premieres this Sunday, November 13, at 10 p.m. EST. It is presented by Nelufar Hedayat who spent 14 months traveling to 22 countries, following and embedding herself into the process of illicit trafficking. In each of the eight, one-hour episodes of The Traffickers Hedayat sheds light on the black market trade of guns, precious metals, babies, endangered species, human organs, and more. Simon Chinn (two-time Oscar winner for Searching for Sugar Man, and Man on Wire) served as executive-producer on the series. The soundtrack by Tandis Jenhudson will be available in early 2017.

As part of the mentorship scheme since being selected as a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, Tandis was able to meet with the legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, whose music inspired Tandis to become a composer and musician from a very early age. This meeting coincided with the maestro’s sell-out concert at the O2 Arena, part of his current world tour.

Today it can be announced that Tandis has been selected as a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, the first composer ever to receive this honour. He was one of 18 honourees revealed this evening at a reception hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James at the global Burberry flagship store, 121 Regent Street, in London. The event was attended by influential industry figures, all keen to meet and interact with the creative stars of tomorrow, including commissioners, agents, and games studio heads. Actors Douglas Booth, Sam Claflin, Olivia Colman and George Mackay introduced the successful honourees, and Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, Burberry Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey, film producers Duncan Kenworthy OBE (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill) and David Parfitt (Shakespeare in Love, My Week with Marilyn); director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral); Christine Langan, Head of BBC Films; and actor Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga, The Mortal Instruments). The initiative celebrates and supports the UK’s future stars of film, television and games through a bespoke career development programme of mentoring, guidance sessions and networking opportunities. ‘Friends of BAFTA Breakthrough Brits’, who have offered to lend their support to the initiative, include Edith Bowman, Douglas Booth, Miranda Hart, Emma Freud, Paul Greengrass, Blake Harrison, Toby Jones, Ian Livingstone CBE, Simon Pegg, Sheridan Smith, and Fiona Sperry.
